Abraham and Peace

ADVENT MEDITATIONS: WEEK 2

Go from your country… to the land I will show you. I will bless you… so that you will be a blessing.
— Genesis 12:1-2

REFLECTION

In Advent, we step into a season of waiting,
longing for the peace that can only fully be found in God.

It might not be often that we think of Abraham’s story as one of peace––
so much waiting, hardship, trials, and mistakes, yes–
but when we sit in the promise that marked his life, we can find that peace abounds.

And that peace stretches beyond his life,
his family, his lineage, to all of us.

Abraham’s journey began with a promise, and a new name.
Though he didn’t know where he was going, he knew who was with him.

Trust produces peace.

Abraham’s life was filled with waiting, and was far from a peaceful, perfect path,
but God was faithful, and he still is.

Peace doesn’t mean that our life won’t be marked with our own waiting, and even our own suffering, but it does mean that it will see us through––that the deep, immovable peace found in the character of God is available to us all.

Because this peace, promised to Abraham, carried through the ages, is fully realized in the Prince of Peace himself. The One who is able to bring healing to a broken world, and steady us on our own journey through this life.

As we journey through Advent, we too wait—for Jesus, whose coming is a promise fulfilled and the mark of a new beginning for us all.

We have the promise. We know the One who holds our future. And that no matter where our path may take us, or what may cross it, He is faithful to see His promises to His children fulfilled. And one day we will sit with Him in paradise, and be called by our own new names, too.

And how much might that truth fill our journey with peace.

APPLICATION

Spend some time journaling, remembering times in your life where God has been faithful. Pray through it, allowing the spirit to fill you with the peace that is found in knowing who holds our story in His hands.

PRAYER

God of Abraham,
You have shown yourself
Faithful through the ages.

May we wait expectantly,
And allow peace to saturate
Our very essence.

May we walk by faith
Not by sight, and look
To your promises to find peace.

May we, like Abraham,
trust the promise of peace,
And wait with hope,
For the Prince of Peace to come.

Make us a blessing,
And our hearts ready
To receive the peace
Promised.

Amen.
