Good morning Salties,
Here we are again, I feel somewhat like Bill Murray in his movie “Groundhog Day”. Another day, just like yesterday, to hear about growing numbers of infected and dying beings. Yet it’s also another day that the Lord has made so we can rejoice and be glad in it. We can have joy today, tomorrow and to the very end of this situation or until God calls us home, thanks to the knowledge that God will never leave us nor forsake us.
I thought I would change up the devotion today and go back to Genesis 5, one of those long genealogies sprinkled throughout Scripture. Cain’s genealogy comes to end in chapter 4 with Lamech, the first bigamist who had taken evil to a new level; murdering a man who only injured him then bragging about it. His line is eventually wiped out in the flood. Here in chapter 5 we see God preserving the divinely ordained line of the promised Seed of the woman. Two recurring phrases are found throughout this chapter and carry redemption history forward; the first “and he had sons and daughters” fulfilling God’s command to be fruitful and multiply. The second “and he died” contradicting Satan’s lie from chapter 3:4. This reminds us that Satan is and always will be a liar (see John 8:44). It is also a grim reminder that the wages of sin is death but a positive reminder that God always keeps his Word (Gen 2:17).
Satan wants us to be fearful, to focus on the bad news but he’s a liar. Jesus is the “Way the Truth and the Life” so let’s stay in God’s Word each day no matter how long all this drags on.
